Influenced by his musical mother, J.R. began studying piano at the age of 6 and later took up guitar and tuba when he entered middle school.  J.R. began writing and composing music at age 12, and his first major concert work, a march for concert band, was performed in 1996 by his middle school band.  He also began learning how to record music at age 12 as he conducted many experiments using an old Tascam 4-track tape recorder and two cheap dynamic microphones to record his rock band. Since then, J.R. has broadened his musical horizons through both formal and informal musical training that he still utilizes while working in the studio today. In 2004, J.R. graduated summa cum laude from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he majored in Music Composition and studied under Timothy Kramer and Justin Merritt, and while at Trinity he learned electronic music synthesis and recording techniques on vintage analog gear from the 1960's.  In 2006, he earned his Master's Degree in Music Composition from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where he studied with Pierre Jalbert, Karim Al-Zand, and Richard Lavenda and developed advanced skills in electronic music composition and digital recording techniques under the tutelage of professor Kurt Stallmann.

As a classical composer, J.R. has won several composition contests at the national and regional level including prizes from ASCAP, the Associated Colleges of the South, and several others.  As a performer, J.R. has played in orchestras, wind ensembles/bands, Dixie and polka bands, jazz bands, and of course rock bands.  He has performed at several prestigious venues including New York's Carnegie Hall and has performed on several regional, national, and European tours. Through these eclectic musical experiences, J.R. has been exposed to many different musical styles and has developed his versatility to produce, compose, and record many different genres of music, whether it is rock, pop, classical, country, jazz, or something more extreme.  J.R. is also proficient on several instruments including piano/keyboard, guitar, drums, bass, singing, and even low brass instruments.

In 2006, J.R. assumed ownership of Backstage Music Center, a music retail store that also housed a small recording studio.  In just three years, J.R. transformed that tiny studio into one of the premier studios in the Houston area, and in the summer of 2009 he moved the studio into a brand new 1700 square-foot facility and renamed it Satellite Music Group. While at the helm at Satellite, J.R. worked with some of the most talented and best-known recording artists, musicians, and film makers in the Houston area and beyond.  With his quality work and professional attitude in the studio, JR has gained the highest admiration and utmost respect from his clients and colleagues alike, and he continues to expand his clientele everyday.

In 2014, J.R. was selected to attend a prestigious Mix With The Masters seminar led by music industry legends and GRAMMY Award winners Michael Brauer and David Kahne, who are best known for their work in the studio with Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, John Mayer, Tony Bennett, among many others.  J.R. was one of 15 people from around the world selected for this particular production/mixing seminar which was held at Studios LaFabrique in the South of France in August 2014.  In October of 2015, J.R. was also chosen to attend a mixing workshop at Sweetwater Studios with his hero and world-renowned mixer Chris Lord-Alge.

For 21 years, J.R. was also part owner and Vice President of All About Music, Inc., the largest privately-owned music and arts school in the Houston area. He taught composition, music theory, low brass, guitar, and piano, and he was the director of Club Rock, the after-school rock band program at All About Music.

After living and working in Houston, Texas his entire life, in 2019 J.R. moved to Orlando, Florida to become a Course Director/Professor in Music Production at Full Sail University. During his time in Florida, J.R. has expanded his work to include post-production audio mixing and editing for film, and he currently serves as Course Director in Audio Post-Production in Full Sail's Film Production Master of Fine Arts program.
